The core concerns of the CCC-GET are the networking, consolidation and expansion of the existing activities in the area of research and the treatment of gastroesophageal tumours. The unit thereby includes all persons, clinics and institutes active in the context of the Comprehensive Cancer Centre of MedUni Vienna / AKH Vienna in the areas of clinical and pre-clinical interdisciplinary research.
Background:
Tumours of the stomach and oesophagus represent approx. 8% of the entire cancer diseases and 35% of the tumours in the digestive tract. Unfortunately, the rate of new cases (incidence) of the gastroesophageal transition has increased significantly during recent years. The widespread disease of reflux is considered to be the cause for the increase in the incidences, which has risen significantly since the 1980s.
During the past years, the deployment of multimodal treatment strategies has clearly improved the curative as well as palliative therapy successes. Still, the prognosis is unfavourable: calculating throughout all tumour stages, less than 15% of the patients are still alive five years after the initial diagnosis.
The focal points of the current treatment are: target-oriented therapies, further optimisation of operative and perioperative management as well as the establishment of clinical and tumour-biological predictive factors. In addition, CCC-GET places great emphasis on translational research projects.
The cores of the treatment of tumours of the gastroesophageal tact are the interdisciplinary tumour board and the specialised fundamental laboratories for the exploration of these diseases. CCC-GET also conducts interdisciplinary national studies and is regularly involved in high-ranking international studies as well as research collaborations. The Gastroesophageal Tumour (CCC-GET) Unit was able to establish itself as a national and international reference centre for the treatment of gastroesophageal tumours due to the resulting expertise as well as the clinical and scientific cooperation.
