CCC Platform for Molecular Diagnostics and Treatment in Oncology

More research and better case management

With the establishment of the CCC Platform for Modular Diagnostics and Treatment in Oncology, existing structures at the Comprehensive Cancer Centre of MedUni Vienna will be bundled and cooperation fortified. This allows for an even more efficient implementation of the precision medicine concepts, as new diagnostic processes as well as scientific processes can be implemented faster into the clinical management of patients. A central project of the platform, which is cooperatively managed by the three disciplines of pathology, internal oncology and surgery, is the establishment of a bio bank. This project is implemented under the leadership of the University Clinic for Surgery in cooperation with the Clinical Institute for Pathology, both MedUni Vienna and AHK Vienna.

The 3 pillars of the new platform
Pathology plays a decisive part in the clinical implementation of the concept of individualised therapy, as the results of the molecular biological diagnostic are the foundation for the choice of therapy.

The results obtained from Pathology are interpreted by the Internal Oncology in cooperation with the specifically established interdisciplinary Tumour Board for Precision Medicine. Next to molecular characterisation of the tumour and the clinical data of the patients, new scientific findings are incorporated in the therapy decision.

In order to ensure optimum treatment of patients yet simultaneously undertake clinical and translational research, the harvesting and activation of tumour tissue is essential. The essential task imposed on the new CCC is the establishment of a biobank. Among other, this comprehensive project comprises of the establishment of a scientific board for project monitoring.
