A rare and sometimes serious complication of intravenously administered chemotherapy is the extravasation: the unwanted leak of the often aggressive substances from the vessel into the surrounding tissue. Extravasation can also occur under optimal conditions; it is important that they are treated quickly and correctly. In order to minimise subsequent harm to the patient, an interdisciplinary extravasation platform was established at the CCC.
Quick and non-bureaucratic support
The extravasation platform is a contact point for all physicians and members of the nursing staff confronted with an extravasation or the suspicion of an extravasation. Experts of the platform give colleagues evidence-based, quick and unbureaucratic advice. Since the beginnings of the extravasation platform in 2006, more than 300 patients were successfully examined and accompanied.
Next to the clinical work, the platform sets a further focus on the execution of scientific clinical and pre-clinical studies on the topic of extravasation. This is essential, as the quick and correct treatment guarantees the minimisation of the trauma and ensure the optimal continuation of the therapy and therefore the recovery of the patient.
Interdisciplinary orientation
The platform has an interdisciplinary orientation and combines - next to oncologists - also experts from the sectors dermatology, plastic surgery, internal medicine, pharmacy, pathology, radiology and, essential in the sector of prevention and screening, support.
